EAST MEETS WEST - CORAI WORLD MUSIC FROM JAPAN

Wednesday 8 August 19:00

CoRai is a fusion of opposites - Japanese and western, classic and modern.

Hiroshi Yamaguchi is a Shamisen player who started his career as a stage Tsugaru Shamisen performer at the age of four. Yamaguchi is also known for his accompaniment of Kabuki performances.

Kentaro Kihara is a jazz pianist who graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston where he was awarded the “Best Jazz Performer Award”. Kihara is actively involved in various fields of music, such as pops, Japanese folk music, choral music and movie soundtracks.

Yamaguchi and Kihara have performed both in Japan and internationally and have collaborated with various artists.

The name of the duo, CoRai, comes from two characters; Co 去 meaning past and Rai 来 meaning future. In their world, East meets West and old meets new. Their hope is that their music can be the bridge between the two cultures and cross the borders of all nations in which they perform.

Their performance varies from tranquil to stormy, wanting their waves of CoRai music to reach the hearts of their audiences all over the world, and share the freshness and unique color of the wind blowing from the past to the future.
