Zanta Hofmeyr (violin)
Jan Hugo (piano)

A concert featuring music from the genius of timeless melodies, Franz Schubert.

Two top class SA artists combine as a duo for the very first time in this interesting programme of varied music by Franz Schubert.

So why would we be joining the Prince of Melodies for cocktails in this programme? Cocktails are always a pleasant blend of hard liquor and soft mixers, causing the senses to settle into a gentle state of relaxation. To start with, the magnificent Fantasy in C, the main work on the programme, can be compared to a heady cognac which demands the refined taste of a connoisseur, blended with fizz and bubbles that tingle and tantalise the palate with profound verve and enjoyment.

The only other original piece for violin and piano on the programme, is the charming Rondo Brilliant opus 70, which shakes the senses with much that still lingers on the edge of Mozartian Rococo style. This is blended with haunting romanticism, randomly flaunting virtuosity and superlative musical taste into 19th century lavishness.

At this point ‘Cocktail Hour’ kicks in big time, when the passion of a Franz Liszt is released through the Schubert / Liszt piano transcriptions. Flashy temperament flirts and cajoles with the great melodies, supplied by the one and only Schubert. In these grandiose piano works, great musical minds marry and outsmart one another, often in orgasmic magnitude.

With many of the great transcriptions, a gentle mood setting and simple announcement of the “Big Tune” tune is followed by playful improvisations. Then follows somewhat passionate and virtuoso development of the music to ‘star’ the pianist as the ultimate ‘show-off’ as it all comes to a glorious and mind blowing manifestation of grandeur.

A selection of Schubert songs are performed on the violin. How their haunting melodies linger and taunt our senses. How nostalgic and how moving, the ingenious accompanimental textures on the pi-ano, underlining the romantic poetry of their texts and glorious melodies. Take heed as the laidback part of the cocktail hour transpires, when nostalgia reigns and the mind settles into the thorough indulgence of the pain of true beauty.

This concert carries you forth into the magical sphere of the world of Franz Schubert, the genius, at his best.
