CECILIA BARTOLE - TRIBUTE

Teresa de Wit (mezzo-soprano)

Sunday 10 November 15:00

Salon Music pays tribute to one of the great mezzo-sopranos of our time with a spe-cial programme of soaring and virtuoso arias. Cecilia Bartoli has done great pioneer-ing work to unearth and dust off long forgotten arias of great charm and she has built up a considerable international following for herself.

South African mezzo-soprano, Teresa de Wit is a singer to be reckoned with, and is well loved by Brooklyn Theatre patrons, who have experienced her artistry often in opera, orchestral concerts and recitals. Her brilliant portrayal of Rosina in La Ce-nerentola (Rossini), Madalena in Rigoletto (Verdi), Countess Zedlau in Wiener Blut (Strauss), among others, leaves you wanting to hear more of that chocolate velvet voice.

Her remarkable performance in Mahler’s Das Lied vor der Erde showed her true prowess in the Lieder genre. Teresa is a fine coloratura mezzo and it is for this rea-son that Brooklyn Theatre’s Artistic Director, has conceptualized this Cecilia Bartoli Tribute, for her to pull out all stops to perform show off her special skills in this reper-toire.

Teresa will perform arias from operas by Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Purcell, Handel, Gluck and Paisiello.

Accompanying Teresa is Marnus Greyling, a recent Cambridge graduate. Marnus is a brilliant concert organist, pianist, harpsichordist, chorus master and musicologist. Marnus’ extensive knowledge of early to late baroque repertoire and performance practice, makes him the perfect accompanist for this concert. A harpsichord will be used for the baroque repertoire, while the Rossini arias will be accompanied on the Steinway.

SA cellist, Wernd van Staden has already established himself as an accomplished performer and orchestral player. He will take care of the basso continuo, with the harpsichord for all the vocal music. In addition, he will perform extracts from the film - Tous les matins du monde - (All the Mornings of the world) for cello and harpsichord by Alain Corneau, St Colombe and Marin Marais, as well as works by Vivaldi.
